Wow, has it only been a bit more than a week since I started work? It feels like I’ve always been roaming the streets of Brussels. Today I even got to sneak a peek into the Council of Ministers, woot!
Let’s see what has been interesting otherwise in the last little while:
- The WWF has published its Living Planet Report and it’s really really depressing. High(low-) light? The Living Planet Index (LPI), which measures trends in thousands of vertebrate species populations (of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish), has declined by 52 per cent since 1970. What the heck are we doing?!
- How School Lunch Became the Latest Political Battleground – fascinating feature article by the NYTimes that looks behind the curtains of US food policy making. Spoiler alert – even ketchup is deeply political.
- Still hung up on the EU’s new Commissioner for Agriculture? Watch Phil Hogan’s answers to his five toughest questions (and learn how to say very little with very many words – a key skill of politicians ;) )
- Word on the street is that “new research suggests food ads may prompt overweight and obese people to overeat.” Apparently, the new insight is that overweight people are more strongly affected by advertizement than normal-weight ones. Read the article, but with caution – I suspect a strong case of reverse causality (e.g. food ads make some people more likely to overeat than others, and those people will end up overweight). Still an interesting finding!
- And finally… How to Store Groceries Properly – guaranteed to cut your food waste down significantly! From this awesome source.
Have a great weekend! What are your plans? I will probably spend a lot of time at this food film festival – seems like my kind of event!
